ARKU donates to WWF project

05.12.08

Again this year, the ARKU management decided to donate to a WWF project. Therewith ARKU says "Thank You" to all business partners for their generosity in 2008.

WWF Project: Polar bear

Worldwide, only 20.000 to 25.000 polar bears are alive. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) fears that the population will decrease by at least 30 percent in the next 45 years. This will result from the melting pack-ice, caused by global warming.

Global warming is the biggest threat for the polar bears. Today, the expansion of the arctic pack-ice is already reduced by 8 percent. This is an area as big as Denmark, Norway and Sweden together. Scientists think that within the next 50 to 100 years, the yearly area of arctic ice will be reduced by 10 to 50 percent. That means the North Pole could be ice-free in summer at the end of this century. The consequences for the polar bears would be terrible: They will lose there means of existence.

What the WWF does!

The polar bears are at the top of the arctic food chain. Animals, which are at the top of a food chain in an ecosystem, are a good indicator for its situation. That is why the WWF especially supports the protection of the polar bears. In the Russian arctic region, they help to enlarge protected landscapes. In the Canadian Hudson Bay, the WWF supports Scientists to study the effects of the climate change on polar bears and their health. Furthermore the WWF participates in national and international events to commit governments and the economy to consistent climate protection.
